From the Crit I had yesterday with Justin, about the content of my research and what I have been collecting it seems to be to broad so I need to think about narrowing my sections down and have a more or a focus point.
So from talking about it in more depth still concentrating on my interests of type and advertising and promotion and large scale work. I am now going to make my research come together a bit more so it all fits so I am going to be anaylsing type within advertising and experimental type in advertising, also looking at a few successful and unsucessful advertising campaigns. This will all come from the research of looking at large scale advertising and typography. I also want to add in my interests of retail design where I will be looking at type in retail this also comes under large scale to.
Thinking about my book I have proposed an idea of a large long landscape book this is to show my interest of large scale advertising. What I will need to do about this if I do decide to go ahead with it which is more then likely I need to get the pages printed myself and get it bound.
My next step is to design some layout ideas for my book and then narrow down the important parts of my research of what I am going to include in my book to then going onto making the final layout for it.

Typography
Whilst browsing the Creative Review Blog I came across these Typographic Trump cards designed by Rick Banks which is relevant to one of the ideas that I had for my Ikea brief but instead I was to combine the two image and type and making it more of a collectable card game to collect all the items of furniture in one room to win the game and at the same time promoting Ikea.
I think these are really effective using type they create an interesting visual with the choice of type chosen and layout. He has created a set of 30 cards that each represent a classic typeface which include the typeface statistics and the year of the design the amount of weights and costs. He has also given each typeface a rating score and even a special power in the game. I like the limited colour palette he has chosen and is makes the cards work more of a set and also they are not clashing with each other.

The other piece of layout work that I thought would be quite nice for my design context was the design shown below. I like the use of colour that breaks up the information and images from each other.
Another piece of work that I found on there website 300million was a Poster for a festival, I've noticed in other images where designers create faces out of type that it is sometimes hard to read the words but in this one the break up of words are legiable and the touch of colour used to highlight areas of the face makes it look really effective and stand out.

This is created by a company called 300million. I really like the layout of type and the style of typography used to create a solid layout also the phrases used are catching to read and look inside the book to see what it holds. The different weights of type really break up the messages making it easier to read. Looking at the image below this it has given me a layout idea for my design context book. I like the use of letters it has used to create a paragraph of text and that it creates a visual image.

Hand Job A Catalog of Type - By Michael Perry
For part of my research I have looked at the book 'Hand job' which is a book of hand drawn and experimental typography created my various designers.
Scanning through the book a few things caught my eye, I was mainly focusing on the impact of the designs as this is something I focus on in my work. I also was looking for colourful images and also the equipment used to create the image as this is also something that interests me.
This typeface below by Emily Anderson was to demonstrate strands of hair to create a letter form, she has used one strand of hair to show this. The context that the typeface has been put in works really with the style and form of the letters and you can straight away what it is trying to demonstrate.

This typeface below is called the Blob typeface by Robin Cameron, he used just pen and paper to create this type the style of this looks quite similar to the flow of hair. It is made up of many curved shapes and lines to form the letters. The weight of line is also different in areas to show the boldness of the letter and the 3D form of it. This typeface was used for flyers for various events in Vancouver.

These two typefaces have been created by Paul Clark his style comes across as quite bold and heavy to create and impactful image. The weight of line is shown through this and shading to create the letters 3D to make it look uplifting from the page. I like the style that he has to make his images stand out and his used of block lettering.
This typeface created by Damien Correll called Hugs for you, really attracted me not just for its message but its style of type, creating it to look like tree trunks. The black heavy type using a halftone effect in parts to create impact and the wight of line to form the type also. The type is also really easy to read and is straight away there in your eye contact.
This typeface below caught my eye because of its patterned design it shows to create the type it was the form of the typeface because I don't think that is that strong. This was created by a designer called Dan Funderburgh. From looking at his website his style of his design is all design based on pattern and decorative design and applying his designs to products etc, the commissioned work he does is a little bit different but still you can see that his style of design is shown throughout it.
Here are a few other pieces of his work from his website that I liked.
This piece of work was designed for Hewlett Packard. I like all the line vector drawings of the possible items that Hewlett sell and how the typeface is intwined into this merging it all together. The colours are simple but still grabs attention to the viewer.
Here he has applied his type design to a product skate boards, this is something that I need to think about doing is applying my type to design to other things not just the usual poster, flyer etc.
This piece was designed for The Artists Guide. where it folds out to be a poster, I like the format of this poster as its not the typical A format, he has also used the space wisely to lay out his design. The style of fonts used is the main attraction to this. The decorative shapes used is something I would like to consider using in my shop window displays as it excentuates the type more and makes it stand out against the others giving it more of a hireachy.
This image of the Blob typeface is designed by Jim the illustrator, his style of design is not really like mine but I chose this because it appealed to me and I thought it was quite humorous and creative. It is not something that inspires me to do as my area doesn't focus in illustration but it inspires me to touch this area where I can develop it furthur.

Drink Label Design
For my Bacardi brief one of the other things that I wanted to create was drink labels for the Bacardi bottle. Here I have looked at exisiting Bacardi labels and other drink labels that interest me and ones that are inspiring me with ideas for my designs for my labels.
Taking my designs of my posters of the lip mark typeface I wanted to use this by making a transperent label to look like lip marks on the bottle to make the design have a seductive and flirtatious feel to it.
I also want to use the other typeface of the legs in some way to, from looking at other exisiting labels I will be able to think about this more and develop my ideas.

Inspirational Ideas of Layout and Format for my Design Context Book
I have considered my chapters based on my interests and the research that I have collected here is the breakdown of them.
I have also sorted out the people who I need to interview who are relevant to my practice and also ask them to look over my portfolio and to give me feedback on it.
1. What makes you as a designer?
2. What is your main inspiration or inspirations that influences your design work?
3. I specialise in design for Advertising and Promotion what would be the best way to get myself into the industry?
4. What advice can you give to make myself stand out against other designers out there who are graduating?
5. I am coming out of university in June what is the best advice you can give me for a starting point that I can furthur?
I am also in the process of researching into relevant design studios and agencies, and looking at their work as an inspiration which I would like to add a few pieces in my book.
Thinking about the Design Context book I thought the best way to display my research etc and the best way to show me as a designer and where my interests lie in design was to relate it to my work in someway. So firstly I thought about doing a book where you can pull the pages out to be bigger either horizontal or vertical the reason for this is because I am interested in design for advertising and promotion at a large scale and the majority of my research is based around this. My inspiration for this idea came from the designer Chris van Diemen.
I have also looked at extending the pages of the book so they are a bigger size to the actual book itself so having long landscape pages in a A4 portrait size book, like the image shown below. Or to have a long landscape book to display the contents in.
I want a simple layout design because I wanting to display the images, for now I also want to stick to the colours black, white and grey. Using a sans serif font for the main body of the text, bold for the headings, and italic for the quotes. The typeface is something I need to research in before I deside on the style of the layout.
